Record-Courier Staff Report
Persh Rohrer is pictured on his 90th birthday in 2008 holding a proclamation from then-Ravenna Mayor Kevin Poland declaring Nov. 11 "Persh Rohrer Day."

A tribute to long-time Record-Courier sports editor and golf columnist Persh Rohrer has been created by event organizers John Ungar, David Pfeiffer and Dino Manno. The Green Jacket Classic honoring Rohrer will be held on Aug. 9 at Club Walden in Aurora.

Rohrer was recognized as the oldest working journalist in Ohio by the Ohio Newspaper Association when he passed away in February of 2015 at the age of 96. Rohrer was hired by the Record-Courier in 1952 and served as the newspaper’s Sports Editor for 37 years before retiring from full-time status in 1989. He remained a part of the sports department until his death, publishing weekly columns that highlighted the Portage County area's top golfers and bowlers.

The Green Jacket Classic, A Tribute To Persh Rohrer, is open to male amateur golfers ages 21 and older. The format will be four-man Stableford. Entry fee is $125 per player/$500 per team, and includes golf, cart, range balls, awards, and '19th hole.' Optional contests and a 50-50 drawing will also be available. Deadline for entries is June 30.

Entry forms are available at Club Walden, or by contacting Ungar at 614-441-3965/johnungar@yahoo.com. For more information, contact Ungar.
