Despite a rather routine win for the Lady Wildcats at Hurley this week, Tuesday night's win was a historic one, as senior Twilah Carrasquillo eclipsed the 2,000-point mark with about a month left to go in her high school basketball career.
The prolific senior also moved atop the Verona scoring record books. According to coach Brandon Weiss, Carrasquillo's 31 points in the win were enough to surpass the previous career record held by her sister, Tristan.
Verona moved to 2-0 in the Ozark 7 Conference with the 61-38 win over the Lady Tigers, 14-6 overall on the season.
The Lady Wildcats led by a score of 17-6 after the first quarter, by the end of which Carrasquillo had already succeeded in reaching the elusive milestone.
An even 10-10 second quarter kept Verona ahead going into halftime, and the visiting team added to its lead in the third period to make it 45-25 going into the fourth.
With a strong lead, Verona took care of business in the final period to pick up its second conference win in as many tries.
Carrasquillo's 31 points led the offense, while Paige Bauer scored 12 for Verona. Rita Castillo followed with nine, Carolina Castillo contributed six, and Yoselin Martinez added one from the free throw line.
After a Thursday contest at Crane, the team will travel to Wheaton on Tuesday before finally returning home for another Ozark 7 game against Exeter next Thursday.
