After a big win against Logan-Rogersville in the district semifinals, the Aurora Houn' Dawgs had a shot at upsetting Monett for a district championship last Thursday, but the effort fell just short for Curtis Bishop's team.
Aurora struck first for a 1-0 lead on a goal by Diego Garcia-Ortega, assisted by Jordani Perez. But the Cubs came back with the next two goals to take the lead and added a third on a penalty kick late in the game.
The Houn' Dawgs responded with a goal (Garcia-Ortega) less than a minute later to make it 3-2 with 10 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, the Aurora comeback attempt was short-lived, as the Cubs added a fourth goal to put the game away and eliminate the Houn' Dawgs.
Despite the disappointing ending, Bishop was vocal about how proud he was of his team.
"Our coaching staff was very proud of the fight, effort and work our team put in all year from winter, summer and fall work that put them in the position we were in [last week]," said the coach. "Our seniors -- Spencer Briggs, Patrick Reyes, Jairo Hedrick, Jordani Perez and Pablo Reyes -- have been outstanding players in our program and have been great leaders/mentors for our younger players and will be missed. I personally want to thank them for their contributions to our Aurora soccer program. Our returning players now know what championship playoff competition is about and what it will take to get our program to the next level and they look forward to that challenge."
