The Marionville Lady Comets went 1-1-1 on the day at last weekend's White Squirrel Classic tournament, defeating Osceola, tying with Wheaton and falling to Pierce City in the final game.
Coach Mark Estep's team began the day by facing Osceola in pool play, where the Lady Comets wasted no time getting the offense going after a 1-2-3 top of the first. After reaching on a walk and a single, respectively, Kelsie Grimm and Alexus Buckert were driven in on a two-run double by Madylon Davis to open the scoring.
Davis scored on a single by Tori LaSalle before Osceoa recorded its first out, but three singles in a row led to another run on a hit by Paula Garcia. The Lady Comets would score three more in the inning to take a comfortable 7-0 lead back out onto the field for the second.
With Buckert on the mound, Osceola went three-up-three-down again in the top of the inning, and Marionville came to the plate to add more to its run total.
A one-out double by Paige Murphy got things going, followed by another RBI single by Garcia to make it 8-0. The Lady Comets would add four more runs in the inning, including two on another double by Davis.
In the top of the third, Osceola managed to put runners on base for the first time with a pair of one-out singles, but a pickoff and a groundout kept the visitors from threatening. With Marionville up 12-0 and the timer up on the tournament game, the Lady Comets took the victory to start the day.
Davis's three hits, five RBI and one run led the team, while Garcia added two hits and two RBI. Buckert picked up the win in the circle, throwing three innings of two-hit ball and striking out two.
Marionville's second game of the day was a different story, as Wheaton kept up punch for punch in the four-inning contest that ended in a 6-6 tie.
The Lady Comets, visitors on the scoreboard, put up three runs in the first and kept Wheaton to one before adding another two in the second. But the Lady Bulldogs came back with five runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 6-5.
An RBI double by Davis tied the game in the top of the third, but neither team was able to score in the fourth before time ran out, ending the game in a draw.
Davis, along with Alyssa White, again led the team in hits (2), adding a run and an RBI, while P. Murphy racked up four RBI on a hit and a walk. In the circle, Buckert threw four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and striking out three.
In the final game of the day, Marionville fell 5-1 to Pierce City in five innings. Davis and White picked up two hits each, with Davis driving in the only run, scored by Grimm.
The Lady Comets followed up the home tournament with a pair of road games early this week, falling 13-9 at Ash Grove and 18-17 at Blue Eye. Marionville will wrap up its regular season this week before competing in the district tournament at Purdy, beginning with a rematch against Wheaton on Monday.
