The Verona Lady Wildcats picked up a big conference win on the road this week, defeating Wheaton in three sets on Monday evening.

"Our team had a rough weekend at [the] Galena Tournament, so for the team to pull together and get a conference road win was very exciting for them," said coach Brad Stewart. "The team has played well at times this year but has struggled to win the third set, so it was especially pleasing to win in three after nearly winning in two. We are a young team that is growing into a very competitive varsity squad."

Stewart's team won set one 25-13 over their Ozark 7 Conference opponents before dropping set two 25-23. But the Lady Wildcats fought back to take the third and deciding set by a score of 25-19.

Junior Rita Castillo led the way with 15 kills to go along with 19 digs and 10 service points, while sophomore Hailee Wilkinson added 21 digs, 11 service points and three kills. Sophomore Carolina Castillo recorded 14 assists to lead Verona, adding seven points and five digs, as well. Freshman Sydney Gamroth added 10 digs, eight points and four kills, while sophomore Ashley Freiburger contributed five assists, six digs and one kill. Freshman Paige Bauer finished with two kills, five digs and two assists.

Verona followed up the win with a tough home loss to Billings on Tuesday, falling 25-11 and 25-13. The Lady Wildcats will play again at home next Tuesday against Everton and on the road Thursday at Thomas Jefferson.
