One of six identified tornadoes in southwest Missouri caused one fatality and extensive damage in Aurora early Saturday morning. The confirmed EF-1 tornado followed a path down Highway 60, tearing through a number of businesses -- including the Aurora Inn Motel, Sutherlands Lumber and Mayse Automotive.
The fatality occurred at the Aurora Inn, where the southern side of the building was damaged extensively. Authorities have identified the man killed in the storm as Jeremy Lewis of Crane.
Aurora Fire Chief Robert Ward also reported damage to the airport, including several planes.
In the hours following the storm, parts of Highway 60 between Aurora and Marionville had to be shut down due to downed power lines. After several hours of traffic delays, crews with Empire District Utilities were able to restore power to the area.
