Wildcats win one at home, on the road

The Verona Wildcats narrowly lost to Southwest recently, but the boys made a comeback to put two wins on their record over Hurley and McAuley.
Southwest
Verona traveled to Southwest for a tough night getting shots to fall, Coach Brad Stewart said.
“We had some tough shooting luck in the third quarter and scored seven points,” he said. “Southwest was the pre-season favorite and has a really strong squad. I felt like we played the best game we had played in awhile but just came up a little short.”
Southwest defeated Verna 65-58 after the Wildcats led 35-30 at the half.
Cody Ernsberger led with 23 points -- five being three-pointers. Wesley Kissinger followed with 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists; Seth Losack had 12 points and 11 assists; Nick Washam had four points and four rebounds;
and Tomas Estrada had two points.
The junior varsity fell 48-40 to Southwest. Seth Hilton led with 11 points, followed by Brent Downs with 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks; and Dalton Miller with nine points.
Hurley
Verona led Hurley during the first quarter, but the Tigers matched the Wildcats by the half. Verona eventually won by seven.
Washam opened the game with a basket off a rebound. He later added a reverse layup to put Verona up 7-2.
Kissinger, Downs and Losack scored for Verona in the first quarter, giving the Wildcats the 14-9 lead.
In the second quarter, Hurley allowed Losack, Kissinger and Ernsberger to pull ahead 23-15, but a couple of three-pointers by Hurley pulled the Tigers back into the game.
Hurley had a two-point lead with less than a minute left in the half, but Washam managed a shot from the block to tie the score at 31.
Verona pulled ahead again in the third quarter to lead 44-38 going into the final quarter.
Verona held its lead to win 57-50.
McAuley
The Wildcats traveled to McAuley on January 13 for another Ozarks 7 Conference win.
Verona narrowly led by one at the half with a score of 27-26, but a big third quarter allowed the Wildcats to seal the win. Verona outscored McAuley 26-9 in the third to put the score at 53-35.
Verona gained the 67-48 win. The win put Verona
3-2 in the conference.
Ernsberger and Kissinger had big nights on the perimeter with three three-pointers each. Ernsberger led with 23 points, while Kissinger had 19 points. Washam had 18 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Losack with two points and 11 assists, Estrada with two points and Downs with three points.
The JV won 42-33. Dalton Miller led with 11 points, followed by Downs and Sergio Estrada with nine each, Hilton with six, Cody Musick and Enrique Salas with three each and Dre Sitton with one.
