Lady Houns lose at home in Big 8 Conference match-up

Aurora Lady Houns kept Carl Junction to a narrow lead and tied up the score a few times, but foul trouble in fourth quarter gave the Lady Bulldogs the window to gain the 40-55 win.
Before the Big 8 Conference game on February 11 began, the Lady Houns recognized five seniors for their contribution to Lady Houn’ basketball. Recognized were Randi Hobson, Ashlynn Meredith, Talia Pilkenton, Marissa Westfall and Emmelliey Zellers.
Aurora, coached by Kris Besch, started sluggish and trying to force the ball on Carl Junction’s press. Neither team got a good start on making shots early in the first quarter, leaving the score set at 1-4 in favor of Carl Junction midway through the quarter.
Aurora struggled on both ends of the floor with rebounding and struggled with moving the ball on offense.
Paige Johnson gave Aurora its first point with a free throw, but Aurora didn’t get to scoring until late in the first quarter with Westfall making two free throws. Pilkenton, who shot 55 percent on the three-point line, put up a long three pointer to give Aurora six points in the first quarter. The quarter ended with the Lady Houns trailing 6-14.
Aurora closed in on Carl Junction midway through the second quarter with two three pointers coming from Pilkenton. Hobson and Beki Breshears also contributed to Aurora’s second quarter points.
The Lady Houns improved on defense and kept Carl Junction out of the lane for easy shots. Aurora also increased its pressure to force turnovers. Aurora ended the first half tailing by one with the score set at 22-23.
Aurora came out strong early in the third quarter with a full-court press. Hobson drove the lane for two points, while Breshears tied the score at 25 with a free throw.
Pilkenton again had two three pointers in the third quarter to give Aurora the 31-27 lead, but Carl Junction eased back into the lead with a couple free throws and a jump shot. Aurora trailed 31-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Johnson tied the score at 33 in the start of the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a small scoring run to go up by seven. Ashlynn Meredith scored on a free throw, while Pilkenton added two free throws of her own. Aurora trailed 36-42 with 3:39 left in the game.
Hobson, Meredith and Breshears added points to the board to close Carl Junction’s lead to seven, but Aurora sent the Lady Bulldogs to the free-throw line too many times late in the fourth quarter with Pilkenton and Breshears fouling out of the game.
Carl Junction kept Aurora from scoring during the rest of the game, while the Lady Bulldogs made free throw after free throw. Carl Junction won 55-40.
Rachel Crockett had one point, eight rebounds and one assist; Hobson had four points, five assists, four rebounds, one block and four steals; Ashlyn “Peanut” Hilton had three rebounds; Meredith had three points, five rebounds and one steal; Pilkenton lead with 22 points, one rebound and four steals; Westfall had two points and one rebound; Breshears had five points, three assists, five rebounds and two steals; and Johnson had three points, four rebounds and one steal.
Aurora averaged 15 percent, while Carl Junction averaged 49 percent on two-point shots. Aurora averaged 29 percent on the three-point line, compared to Carl Junction’s 17 percent. The Lady Houns’ shooting success was found on the free throw line with an average of 61 percent, while Carl Junction averaged 67 percent.
Aurora did out-rebound the Lady Bulldogs by pulling down 31 rebounds with 15 being offensive. Carl Junction had 19 rebounds with 15 coming on defense.
Aurora Junior Varsity
The Lady Houn’ junior varsity team did pull out a narrow win over Carl Junction with a score of 40-39.
The JV team trailed 4-10 at the end of the first quarter but outscored Carl Junction in the second and third quarters. Carl Junction scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, while Aurora put up 11 points.
Emily Weldin led the team with 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and one assist, while Brittany Kreger pulled down 11 rebounds. Player stats were: Morgan Waggoner with six points, Hilton with two points, Kreger with nine points, Andrea Epperson with two points, Zellers with six points and Katie Meredith with three points.
“This was probably the best game for us this season,” Coach Jean Singleton said. “The girls played with a lot of pride and heart to beat Carl Junction.”
Aurora vs. Cassville
The Lady Houns traveled to Cassville on February 15 for a Big 8 Conference game.
Aurora trailed 9-17 in the first quarter but outscored Cassville by five in the second quarter to end the first half down 19-22.
The Lady Houns struggled in the second half and couldn’t overtake Cassville. Cassville ended up winning 51-41.
Aurora shot three of nine, or 33 percent, on two-point shots, while Cassville averaged 44 percent, making 18 of 41 two-point shots.
Behind the three-point line, Aurora averaged 32 percent with Pilkenton making five of 12 and Breshears making two of six. Cassville only made one three pointer, but attempted four shots.
The Lady Houns averaged 57 percent on the free throw line, compared to Cassville’s 52 percent.
Aurora pulled down 24 rebounds with 15 being defensive, but the Lady Houns had 18 turnovers during the night, while Cassville had eight.
Player stats were: Crockett with two points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals; Hobson with six points, one assist, four rebounds, four blocks and three steals; Hilton with one rebound; Meredith with three points and one rebound; Pilkenton with 18 points, one assist and three rebounds; Westfall with two points, one assist and three rebounds; Breshears with eight points, two assists and four rebounds; and Johnson with two points, two assists, five rebounds and one block.
