The Verona Lady Wildcats started the season with a two-set win over Hurley on August 31. The game was the team’s first game and home opener of the season.
Junior Jessica Smith started serving for Verona, and, with the help of junior Tristan Carrasquillo who blocked a Hurley spike, Verona was up 3-0.
Carrasquillo added a point on an ace to give Verona the 7-2 lead. Junior Jenna Chadd added an ace to keep Verona up.
The Lady Wildcats kept a healthy lead for the first set with Smith and Carrasquillo domimating the net with kills and blocks.
Verona went on an eight-point streak before Hurley put up a point. The Lady Wildcats won 25-11.
The second set went in Verona’s favor as the Lady Wildcats went on an 11-2 run with senior Lynnsey Youngberg and Carrasquillo gaining points and sophomore Jordyn Butler on the service line.
Freshman Amanda Mullen won a tip at the net to give Verona a 13-5 lead. Smith and Carrasquillo each had her share of kills to go up 20-13.
Hurley struggled on the last plays of the set to allow Verona to win 25-13.
Game leaders were: Carrasquillo with five kills and three blocks; sophomore Taylor Pinkly with six digs; freshman Shelby Barsotti with four assists; Smith with five aces, 20 service points, three assists and three kills; Youngberg with three assists and three digs; Chadd with two aces and one dig; Mullen with one kill; and Butler with 10 for 10 serves.
