The Verona Wildcats stepped up on defense against state-ranked Southwest on February 19. The Wildcats struggled late in the second and into the third quarter, which would keep Southwest out of reach for Verona.
Southwest opened with a three-pointer, while Larry Patterson posted a two-point shot. Both ends continued to be physical with players scrambling on the floor to get loose balls and force turnovers.
The Trojans kept Verona, coached by Brad Stewart, to two points until midway through the quarter when Ascencion Estrada scored on a three-point shot. Verona controlled the ball on offense better than previous games, but the Wildcats couldn’t put up any points. Southwest ended the first quarter leading 21-12. Verona’s scorers were Wesley Kissinger, Clifford Williams and Cody Ernsberger.
In the second quarter, Williams seemed to come alive on both ends of the floor with jumpshot after jumpshot and pulling down defensive rebounds. Williams had five of Verona’s eight points in the second quarter. Verona ended the first half down by 10 with the score at 20-30.
Williams opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the third quarter, followed by a jumper from Kissinger and a three-pointer from Ernsberger. Southwest continued to post points and out-rebounded Verona in the third quarter.
A layup by Seth Losack put Verona down 35-48 with about three minutes left in the third quarter, but Verona closed Southwest’s lead to nine with the final points coming from Williams and Losack. At the close of the quarter, Verona trailed 40-49.
Ernsberger, Losack and Patterson opened the scoring for the Wildcats to put Verona within six, but a three-pointer by Kissinger pushed Verona within three.
With time running out, Verona was forced to foul to stop the clock midway through the fourth quarter, but Southwest found success on the free-throw line to inch further ahead of the Wildcats.
Verona had Losack and Patterson foul out with less than two minutes left in the game. By then, Southwest increased its lead to 10 and finished the game ahead by 16 and the score set at 66-50.
