Both Aurora teams traveled to Republic for the Class 4 District 11 Tournament with fifth seeds. In both games, Aurora traded the lead with their opponents, but it wasn't meant to be for Aurora. The Houn' Dawgs and Lady Houns ended their seasons in the first round of districts.
Houn' Dawgs
Aurora’s Houn’ Dawg basketball team traveled to Republic to participate in the first round of Class 4 District competition. The Houn’ Dawgs, coached by Darin Meinders, took on the McDonald County Mustangs and suffered an upsetting 48-46 loss. The narrow loss marked the end of the 2009-10 season for the Dawgs.
The Mustangs put up two points to close the gap to 45-42, which Waylon Doty followed with another successful free- throw point to make the score 46-42. McDonald County added three free-throw shots of its own to tie the game up at 46 with one and a half minutes to go in the quarter. Aurora pushed hard to break the tie and secure the win, but luck was with the Mustangs who drained a two- point shot at the buzzer to steal the victory 48-46.
Lady Houns
The Aurora Lady Houns exchanged the lead with Monett through most of the game on February 22 in the first round of the Class 4 District 11 Tournament, but midway through the third quarter Monett gained the momentum and ended Aurora’s season.
The Lady Houns pulled within one at the start of the fourth quarter with a basket by Crockett, but Monett continued to sink free throws. Meredith pulled Aurora within two with a jumper, but again, Monett pulled ahead by seven with success at the free throw line.
With less than four minutes left in the game, Breshears fouled out and put Monett in double bonus. While Aurora tried to close the gap with points from Meredith, the Lady Houns couldn’t recover.
Aurora ended the game with a 46-55 loss.
