The AHS Houn’ Dawgs took to their home court for the last time this season on February 12, to give spectators a final exciting home game. The Dawgs managed to pull off a narrow 64-62 victory in overtime action over the Carl Junction Bulldogs.
Senior members of the team -- Betim Begzatoski, Korey Besch, Waylon Doty and David Eckman -- were recognized before the start of the game. Senior cheerleaders Marissa McKay, Devan Roe, Jordan Tate and Trent Chopski, were also honored.
Aurora, coached by Darin Meinders came out fierce in the first quarter with a strong offense and a tight defense. Besch made the first points of the evening 20 seconds into the game when he swished a three pointer. The Dawgs continued to drive hard and made another 10 points to hold the lead. Doty had six of those points, while Josh Myers and Aaron Cox made the other four.
The Bulldogs had a quick surge of offense late in the first quarter. The visiting team made 10 points in the last two and a half minutes to steal the lead from the Houn’ Dawgs. The quarter ended with the Dawgs trailing the Bulldogs 13-18.
The Dawgs fought back in the second quarter. Cox sank a three pointer to kick off the quarter within the first 30 seconds. The Bulldogs answered with two points of their own to put the score at 16-20. Begzatoski followed with a free throw shot, and then David Eckman drove in for a layup, drew the foul
and shot a free throw of
his own to tie the score at 20.
The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the second quarter. Eckman, Cox and Begzatoski each added another two points for Aurora, while Marshall Basham had three points and Clayton Sumners had one. Carl Junction increased its total to 29 points with a three pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Houns who ended the quarter with 30 points.
Aurora’s success carried over into the beginning of the third quarter. Basham sank his second three pointer of the night to start the quarter. Tanner Kasinger followed with two points to build Aurora’s lead to 35-49. After that, Aurora’s defense began to falter, while its offense struggled to put points on the board. Carl Junction built its total to 45 points by the conclusion of the quarter. Aurora remained scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, except for a driving layup from Doty, putting the Dawgs total at 37.
Both teams drove hard in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs narrowly held the lead for almost the entire quarter, but the Houns were never far behind. Cox was key on offense making nine points in the first six minutes. Doty had five points in that same time frame, while Besch had another three. Carl Junction made 10 points in comparison.
Andrew Parker stepped up to the free throw line and sank both shots to give Aurora the 56-55 lead with a minute and a half to go in the quarter. Carl Junction answered with a free throw of its own to tie the game back up at 56. Parker then went to the line again making another shot to take the lead back 57-56. Kasinger was sent to the free throw line for two shots with less than 20 seconds to go, and the junior athlete landed both shots to give Aurora a more comfortable 59-56 lead. However, the Bulldogs threw in a quick three-point shot with three seconds to go in the quarter to tie the game up at 59.
The tie score sent the teams into a four minute overtime. Cox scored first with a successful free throw. Carl Junction followed with a two-point shot tipping the score in its favor 61-60.
The Bulldogs then made another free-throw shot, before Cox made two free throws of his own to tie the game up at 62.
Doty made the final points of the game driving in for a layup to give the Houn’ Dawgs the 64-62 victory.
Players stats were: Cox with 19 points, Parker with three points, Basham with six points, Besch with six points, Kasinger with four points, Clayton Sumners with one point, Myers with two points, Eckman with five points, Begzatoski with three points and Doty with 15 points.
In junior varsity action, the boys lost to Carl Junction 45-56.
Player stats were: Jordan Fronabarger with seven points, Maclain Rapp with three points, Austin Nickell with 14 points, Sumners with two points, Tyler Denney with two points, Devan Stephens with 13 points and Logan Parker with four points.
Aurora vs. Ash Grove
The Houn’ Dawgs walked away with another win on February 16 over Ash Grove.
The two teams were neck-and-neck at the end of the first quarter with Aurora maintaining a one-point lead with the score set at 9-8.
At the end of the first half, the Houn’ Dawgs led by seven, but it was in the third quarter when Aurora increased its point gap. At the end of the third quarter, Aurora led 47-25.
Aurora finished the game with the 62-42 win over the Pirates.
Scoring for Aurora was: Cox -- 11 points, Parker -- five points, Basham -- 15 points, Besch -- three points, Kasinger -- four points, Sumners -- four points, Myers -- four points, Eckman -- one point and Doty -- 12 points.
