The Verona Lady Wildcats’ chances of moving forward in the post season looked questionable midway through the match-up with Chadwick on March 3, but Verona’s talent brought the Lady Wildcats from behind for the 55-49 win.
Verona, seeded first, faced Chadwick, seeded fourth, in the semifinal round of the Class 1 District 6 Tournament.
Verona, coached by Ryan Yates, appeared to be on the hunt for the championship in the first quarter with the Lady Wildcats outscoring Chadwick 10-1.
Tristan Carrasquillo led the Lady Wildcats in the first quarter with a three-pointer, two free throws and a jumpshot. Carrasquillo scored seven unanswered points before Chadwick scored on a free throw.
Jessica Smith rounded off the quarter with a three-pointer of her own.
In the second quarter, Chadwick made a comeback to be within two points until Beth Bigham drained a three-point shot at the close of the first half to keep the Lady Wildcats up 22-17.
While Chadwick started closing the point gap, Verona steadily put up points in the first part of the second quarter. Carrasquillo put up a free throw and a two-point shot.
Smith again had success on the free-throw line. She found herself on the line several times during the game with her first two free throws coming in the second quarter.
After Smith’s free throws, Verona went scoreless for more than a minute and a half. During that time, Chadwick came within five points of the lead.
Bigham and Jenna Chadd finished out the scoring in the first half.
Verona’s foul trouble and penetration of the lane allowed the Lady Cardinals to put up several points.
In the third quarter, Chadwick held the momentum and tied it up at 24, and then, pulled ahead by two after a steal.
The Lady Wildcats seemed rattled in the start of the third quarter with Chadwick’s tight defense. Chadwick also out-rebounded Verona to gain possession or second looks at the basket.
The two teams exchanged the lead in the start of the third quarter, but Chadwick eased into the lead to leave Verona trailing 30-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Scoring for Verona in the third quarter were Chadd, Carrasquillo and Smith.
Verona trailed 27-35 as the third quarter was closing, but Chadd finished with a three-pointer to bring the Lady Wildcats back into striking distance.
The Lady Wildcats fared better in the fourth quarter and looked more like the team that played in the regular season with composure and confidence.
Bigham opened with a three-pointer to put Verona within two.
With confidence, Verona started going for steals in the fourth quarter, which led to points on the board.
Verona wasn’t out of the clear midway through the fourth quarter, but with a three-pointer from Bigham and two-point shots from Chadd and Dodson, the Lady Wildcats regained the lead and went up 44-37.
With about two minutes left in the game, Verona was up by 10, but foul trouble sent Chadwick to the free-throw line and the score set at 49-44. With about 30 seconds left in the game, Bigham fouled out.
Chadwick attempted to stop the clock with fouls, but Chadd, Smith and Carrasquillo were successful on the free-throw line to give Verona the 55-47 win.
Verona faces Walnut Grove in the championship game at 6 p.m., March 5.
