The Marionville Lady Comets won their first home match of the season two games to none, but the matchup was much closer than that score indicates, as the home team had to hold off Southwest for a pair of 25-23 wins. The victory gave the Lady Comets an overall record of 4-3 on the year.
Game one got off to a rocky start for the home team, as they went down 2-7 after the first nine points. But Coach Taylor Aurentz's team battled back to tie it at eight points apiece and took its first lead on an ace by Morgan Barrickman to make it 9-8.
After some trading of the lead, Marionville took control and led for the rest of the game. Errors down the stretch made it a tense finish, but the Lady Comets got the job done, forcing Southwest into mistakes of its own.
In game two, Marionville's struggles lasted a little longer, but the Lady Comets kept it close and were eventually able to take four of the last five points to snatch the win and the sweep.
Solid play by veterans Barrickman and Kaylee Neveln was key for the Lady Comets, but freshmen Emma Barrickman, Shelby Webb and Madison Essary played beyond their years to help the team to victory.
The team will now play several road matches before returning home, including trips to Cassville and Verona early next week for non-conference matchups.
