The Verona Wildcats have doubled last year's win total already this baseball season, after defeating Golden City last week and Wheaton on Monday.

In last Thursday's matchup with Golden City, junior pitcher Kolton Pinkly shut down the opposition, allowing just two hits and one walk over seven innings of work, striking out 12 batters along the way.

Meanwhile, the offense came to life for Fred Lundien's team. Verona grabbed the early lead with two runs in the top of the first, adding insurance runs in all but the third and sixth innings to claim an 8-0 win.

Caleb Hillhouse had a huge day at the plate for Verona, racking up four hits -- including three doubles -- three runs and two RBI. Pinkly added a hit, a run and an RBI, while James Tye contributed two hits, and David Hoziner drove in a pair of runs.

In the victory over Wheaton, Hillhouse put in the work both on the mound and at the plate, pitching a shutout in another two-hitter for the Wildcats. The junior walked one and struck out nine for the win.

Hillhouse again led the offense, this time with a home run as one of his two hits, along with three runs and two RBI. Pinkly added two hits, a run and an RBI, as did Gabe Smith. Leo Martinez and Dillin Shrum each finished with a hit, a run and an RBI in the 10-0 victory.

The Wildcats will look to add to their win total next week, with home games against Hurley (Tuesday) and Sparta (Thursday) before traveling to Galena on Friday.
