After defeating Fordland in the Sparta Softball Classic for their first win of the season, the Lady Comets followed up one dominant performance with another, defeating Lockwood 18-1 in three innings.
The visitors on the day, the Lady Comets got off to a hot start in the top of the first, utilizing the free pass to put seven runs on the board in the first frame. Seven walks, one hit batter and one single gave Marionville the comfortable lead early in what would become a shortened game due to the mercy rule.
The visitors tripled their hit count in the second inning, with singles by Alexus Buckert and Madylon Davis, but the walk was still a problem for Lockwood pitching. With five free passes this time around, the Lady Comets added five more runs to make it 12-0 after an inning and a half.
Lockwood looked threatening to start out the bottom of the second, with two singles to lead off, but a double play would put a quick end to that threat.
It was more of the same for Marionville in the top of the third, as batters showed patience to take the free passes given. Alyssa White and Tori LaSalle also added hits in the six-run inning which pushed the lead to 18-0.
Lockwood managed to cut the deficit by one run in the bottom of the inning, but it was far from enough, and the Lady Comets celebrated their second win of the season.
Buckert was the leader all around for Marionville, finishing with two hits, a run and four RBI at the plate and picking up the win in the pitching circle. She allowed five hits on the day, walking one and striking out two for the victory.
Marionville followed up the wins with a home loss to Fair Grove on Tuesday, but the team will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday at Skyline before hosting Jasper the following day.
