Despite two early runs in last Thursday's matchup at Crane, the Marionville Lady Comets were unable to pick up their first win on the season, falling 11-6 to the Lady Pirates to drop to 0-4 on the season.
Kelsie Grimm and Alexus Buckert led off the first with back to back singles for the Lady Comets before being driven in on a single by Madylon Davis. Unfortunately for Marionville, the next three batters would go down in order, stopping the rally as quickly as it started.
Crane erased the two-run deficit and then some in its half of the first, as the leadoff batter reached on an error and scored on a single by the following batter. The Lady Pirates would score five more runs in the inning -- with hits no greater than singles -- to take a 6-2 lead after one.
After an uneventful second inning, the Lady Comets cut the lead down to two runs, as a single by Tori LaSalle drove in Buckert and Davis after each had gotten hits with one out.
Crane would add one run in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth to make it 8-4, but the Lady Comets wouldn't go away quietly. Another RBI single by LaSalle made it 8-5 in the top of the sixth, as Buckert scored for the third time.
Three more runs on the Crane side in the bottom of the sixth left just one more chance for the Marionville team to come back. A two-out single by Grimm drove in a run for the Lady Comets in the top of the seventh, but coach Mark Estep's team would get no closer, as the next batter grounded out to end the game.
Buckert's three hits and three runs led the offense, while LaSalle added three RBI on two hits. Davis and Grimm also recorded two hits and a run each, driving in three runs between them.
Buckert took the loss in the circle, giving up 12 hits and five earned runs, while striking out three.
The Lady Comets will look to avenge an earlier loss to Mt. Vernon on Monday, as they host the Lady Mountaineers before playing at home again Thursday against Pleasant Hope.
