The Aurora Houn' Dawgs faced a familiar foe in the first round of the Blue and Gold Tournament in Springfield on Tuesday, as former Aurora head coach Daniel Cutbirth was on the other bench, this time leading the Willard Tigers to a 62-50 victory over his old team.
With Cutbirth's knowledge of the veteran Houn' Dawgs' tendencies, the Tigers picked apart the Aurora defense and stymied the offense enough to advance with a win.
The seventh-seeded Tigers led the entirety of the game, including by as many as 16 points by the end of the third quarter. Ultimately, the Houn' Dawgs couldn't go on a good enough scoring run to make an attempt at taking over the lead.
Seniors Matthew Miller and Clayton Dunning led the Houn' Dawg offense with 22 and 15 points, respectively. Junior Casey Weathermon added eight, while senior Austin Erickson finished with three and junior Logan Lauffer contributed two.
With the loss, the Houn' Dawgs went on to face Crane on Wednesday night. Look for results from that game and the rest of Aurora's games in the tournament in next week's sports pages.
