The week seven defeat at the hands of the Houn' Dawgs must have lit a fire under the Mt. Vernon Mountaineers, for the visitors to Kelley Field last Friday were determined to win the game that mattered and knocked the Houn' Dawgs out of district play with a 30-18 win.

The game couldn't have been more different from the Big 8 Conference contest, in which the Dawgs rolled to a 33-14 victory. Mt. Vernon put up the first score in the first quarter to make it 6-0, but the Houn' Dawgs answered early in the second period to tie it up.

From there, the Mountaineers scored 24 unanswered points to lead 30-6 at the end of three quarters. The Houn' Dawgs managed two more touchdowns in the final frame but it was too little too late for the home team, and the season ended prematurely on Aurora's home turf.

The Houn' Dawgs finish the season with an overall record of 5-5 and a 4-3 mark in conference play in their first season under Coach Craig Weldy. Aurora will have to fill the shoes of 11 seniors before next season, including Austin Erickson, Chase Moore, Clayton Dunning, John Dakota Lee, Luis Gonzalez, Blake Williams, Connor Savage, Brendan Castleberry, Michael Pendergrass, Dakota Kessinger and Carlos Cordova.
