The Marionville Lady Comets survived a three-set match on Monday to advance to the Class 2, District 10 semifinals, where their season ended on Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to top-seeded Clever.
The fourth-seeded Lady Comets faced fifth seed Purdy on Monday and trailed for much of the first set despite staying within a couple points of the lead throughout. Late in the set, an ace by senior Tori LaSalle gave Marionville the 19-18 lead, and the Lady Comets held on for the rest of the set, winning the last two points on aces by junior Madylon Davis.
Marionville fell behind early in the second set as well, but this time the Lady Comets could never rally to take the lead and eventually fell by a score of 25-21.
With the season hanging in the balance, the teams went to a third and decisive set, and again the Lady Comets fell behind early. But aces by senior Emily Geisendorfer tied the set up at six points apiece before Marionville took its first lead of the set at 9-8.
The teams traded points until a kill by Davis put Marionville up 13-12, and the Lady Comets never gave up the lead for the rest of the set, eventually winning 25-22 to advance to the district semifinals.
The team was rewarded for its resiliency on Monday with a Tuesday meeting with top-seeded Clever. Unfortunately for the Lady Comets, the Lady Jays were determined to reach the finals and dispatched the lower seed in two sets, 25-8 and 25-9. Clever would go on to win the district championship in two sets over Crane.
Marionville finished its first season under coach Taylor Aurentz with an overall record of 9-20-2. Following the match Tuesday, a pair of postseason awards were bestowed on the Lady Comets, as Davis was named second team All-District and LaSalle earned second team All-Conference.
