As the regular season winds down for the fall soccer season, the Aurora Houn' Dawgs showed they can handle the pressure of a close game, hanging on to a 1-0 lead against Fair Grove for a win last Thursday.

The first half was a defensive battle, as the Houn' Dawgs struggled to put a shot on goal in the offensive half but managed to come up with big saves on the other end.

With big saves by Patrick Reyes to keep his team in the game, the Dawgs were finally able to take the lead with 28:15 left to play in the second half. Lester Perez connected with the back of the net on an impressive curling shot to take the 1-0 lead.

The defense continued to keep Fair Grove off the board for the rest of the game, including in a big moment in stoppage time. Reyes was called for holding on to the ball for more than the allotted six seconds and received a yellow card for dissent, resulting in an indirect free kick for Fair Grove just inside the 18-yard box. A game-saving block by the defense kept the ball out of the net, however, giving Aurora a crucial late-season victory.

Unfortunately, the Houn' Dawgs fell just short in a match against New Covenant on Monday, falling 3-2 a week before the opening round of district play. Aurora will enter the four-team tournament as the second seed and will face hosts Logan-Rogersville at 6 p.m. next Monday.
