The Aurora Houn' Dawgs picked up their second tournament championship in a row last Saturday, defeating hosts Thomas Jefferson 6-0 to bring home the trophy.
Aurora started off the tournament with a tough match Friday against Columbus (Kansas). Despite a free kick goal conceded, the Dawgs won 2-1 on goals by juniors Spencer Briggs and Patrick Reyes.
A 1-0 shutout of College Heights put the Dawgs in the championship, thanks to a last-minute goal by senior Miguel Gallardo. Coach Curtis Bishop said it was one of the best games of the year for his team defensively, thanks in part to five saves by Reyes in goal.
Against the Cavaliers in the final, the Dawgs made a statement with six goals, including a hat trick by senior Denny Mayne. Junior Jordani Perez added two goals and two assists, while Gallardo recorded a goal and three assists. Patrick and Pablo Reyes combined for a shutout in goal, the fifth overall for the Houn' Dawgs on the year.
The team would pick up its sixth shutout as the Dawgs returned home on Monday against Greenwood. An early goal by Gallardo put the home team up 1-0, and the score would hold until the final whistle. Patrick Reyes recorded the shutout in goal this time, keeping the clean sheet with a vital penalty save in the second half.
The Dawgs will continue play next week with a road trip to Webb City on Tuesday before returning home against Marshfield on Thursday. Both matches will kick off at 4:30 p.m.
