After a closely contested first set, the Marionville Lady Comets rolled to a sweep over Verona at home on Tuesday evening, taking down the Lady Wildcats 27-25 and 25-10.

Marionville began the first set by claiming the first three points, including an ace by senior Tori LaSalle. But Verona would tie the set up at four points apiece and then take the lead after a series of Marionville errors.

The teams traded points back and forth throughout the set, neither able to to build a lead of more than three points at any time. The Lady Comets eventually worked to set point at 24-22, but Verona would not go down easily, winning the next three points to make it 25-24. Unfortunately for coach Brad Stewart's team, the Lady Wildcats couldn't keep the ball in play, giving Marionville the 27-25 win in set one.

Things went much more smoothly in the second set for coach Taylor Aurentz and the Lady Comets. Though Verona took an early lead on a Marionville error, the home team rallied back to win the next four points. From there, the Lady Comets rolled, only allowing an occasional point to the visiting Lady Wildcats. A 25-10 set two victory gave Marionville the sweep and its first regular season win of the year (previous wins came in Verona Invitational tournament).

With the loss, the Lady Wildcats dropped to 1-6-1 overall on the season. Coach Stewart's team will continue play next week on the road at Galena on Monday and at home against Southwest on Tuesday before competing in the Galena Tournament on Saturday.

Marionville will host Hollister on Tuesday before traveling to Greenfield for a match on Thursday evening.
