The Big 8 Conference's fiercest volleyball rivalry renewed last Thursday, as the Aurora Lady Houns visited Mt. Vernon for the teams' first regular season match. The defending conference champion Lady Houns rolled to victory over their rivals in straight sets, 25-18 and 25-15.
Aurora came out sluggishly against the Lady Mountaineers, who took a 7-3 lead before the Lady Houns' big hitters got the visiting team back even. After making a kill to tie the game at seven, senior Emily Moore served up an ace to give the Lady Houns the 8-7 lead. Aurora would not trail for the rest of the set, eventually taking it 25-18.
The slow start in the first set did not repeat itself for Aurora in the second, as the Lady Houns took the first four points on kills by Moore and sophomore Brooke Bellamy, as well as a pair of aces by junior Julia McVey.
Aurora would not trail at all in the second set, leading by as many as nine points midway through on the way to a 25-15 win for the sweep.
Moore and McVey finished the match with nine kills each, as well as three and four aces, respectively. Bellamy and senior Kirsten Coatney added five kills apiece. Senior Kaylee Huffman led the defense with 13 digs, while McVey and senior Jacy Heller added seven each. Senior Rachel Negre contributed 25 assists on the night.
The Lady Houns followed up the win over Mt. Vernon with a home sweep of Reeds Spring on Tuesday, defeating the Lady Wolves 25-14 and 25-14. Aurora will continue the season on the road at Springfield Catholic on Tuesday before taking part in the Strafford Volleyfest next weekend.
