The Boonville Lady Pirates tennis team needed help in a big way Tuesday night while trailing Knob Noster 4-3 with two matches to go.
After leading Knob Noster 2-1 in doubles, the Lady Pirates fell behind 4-3 in singles with senior Paige Beran and junior Erin Kearns still to play at the No. 5 and 6 slot.
As it turned out, the duo delivered for Boonville as Beran defeated Brianna Yacobozzi 8-4 while Kearns beat Katie Binder 8-2 to lift the Lady Pirates to a 5-4 victory.
While the win improved Boonville’s record to 2-1 overall, head coach Stephanie Green said this was a good, solid win against a team that has really been playing well against tough, larger opponents.
“We needed that level of competition to get back into the rhythm of match play since we haven’t played in a week,” Green said. “They were also very nice to play multiple matches so as many of our players got a match as possible. Then we finished out with our players playing each other very competitively.”
Despite dropping the first match in doubles with the No. 1 team of Jessica Leathers and Taylor Fisher falling to Alexis Allen and Jessica Yates 8-2, Boonville was a perfect 2-0 after that to lead Knob Noster by a team score of 2-1.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of Stephanie Kempf and Ellie Monk defeated the team of Elizabeth Eccleton and Ella Konrad by a score of 8-4. Meanwhile, at No. 2 doubles, the team of Paige Beran and Erin Kearns won 8-2 over the team of Brianna Yacobozzi and Katie Binder.
Boonville and Knob Noster also battled back and forth in singles, with the Lady Panthers winning at the No. 1 and 2 positions. At No. 1 singles, Allen defeated Leathers 8-1. Meanwhile, at No. 2 singles, Yates beat Kempf by a score of 8-4.
Of course Boonville would get back in the win column at No. 3 singles, with Ellie Monk prevailing over Elizabeth Eccleton in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4). But even that was short-lived as Knob Noster came back with a win at No. 4 singles with Ella Konrad beating Taylor Fisher 8-5 to lead by a team score of 4-3.
However it was all Boonville after that with Beran and Kearns dominating their matches at the No. 5 and 6 spot for the team victory.
In JV action, Boonville and Knob Noster played to a 2-2 tie.
Recording wins for the Lady Pirates were the No. 3 doubles team of Dianna Koa and Emily Byrne over Rebecca Burch and Madison Eccleton 6-2 and the No. 4 doubles team of Abbie Grizzle and Danielle Dillon over Deaja Holloway and Delynn Johnson in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4).
In other matches, the team of Angela Bryant and Bayli Collins fell to the team of Burch and M. Eccleton 6-3. No. 1 JV singles player Jameshia Johnson also fell to Kayley Turner by a score of 6-2. At No. 5 JV singles, Kamryn Rice upended Bailey Brimer 7-5.
In matches that were suspended, Cidney Dorkins led Deaja Holloway 5-2 and Olivia Browning led Kayley Turner 1-0. At No. 3 JV singles, Jessica Floyd trailed Madison Eccleton 2-1.
