Boonville finishes third overall behind Osage and Moberly
Boonville senior tennis player Jessica Leathers had only one small blip Saturday during the Lady Pirate Open at the high school tennis court.
While Leathers went on to finish in a three-way tie for first at 4-1 with Kaitlyn Shelby of Father Tolton and Kaitlyn Ruck of Osage, she will look back to the match against Shelby as one that got away. Shelby defeated Leathers 8-3 while Leathers beat Ruck 8-6. Leathers also won 9-7 over Moberly, 8-3 over Lexington and 8-1 over Fulton.
As for the final-team standings, Osage captured first at 5-0. Moberly finished second at 4-1, followed by Boonville at 3-2, Father Tolton at 2-3, Lexington at 1-4 and Fulton at 0-5.
Boonville Lady Pirates tennis coach Stephanie Green said it was a long day with a lot of good competition.
“All of the teams had full rosters for the round robin,” Green said. “Our players gained valuable experience playing five times and really toughed out some important and competitive matches. Leathers tied with Osage and Father Tolton for 1st place in the No. 1 singles spot. She played increasingly tough tennis throughout the day and was able to dig in and get the win against a tough Osage opponent to put her in the three way tie. Kearns came into the singles line up last Tuesday and her thrid place finish at the No. 2 singles spot was definitely a highlight. She's tough and agressive and got a lot of match experience today.
“Kempf/Monk had some good competition with Osage and Moberly and made good strides in their doubles play and strategy getting more aggressive in the front court. Fisher/Beran really upped their level on play and even in a tough loss to Osage were making strides to develop their game together. Johnson/Floyd really needed these matches to gain skills and experience and to build their confidence. They dug in, came back in some matches and showed themselvesthey have the ability and potential to win. Johnson has been nursing a knee injury and she really hung in there today through five hot and tough matches.”
In the team matches, Boonville defeated Father Tolton 3-2, Lexington 5-0 and Fulton 5-0 and lost to Moberly 3-2 and Osage 4-1.
Of course Leathers wasn’t the only place finisher for Boonville. The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Fisher and Paige Beran finished second at 4-1 while the No 1 doubles team of Stephanie Kempf and Ellie Monk took third with a record of 3-2. Erin Kearns also placed third at No. 2 singles with a record of 3-2 while the No. 3 doubles team of Jameshia Johnson and Jessica Floyd finished fourth with a record of 2-3.
