After dropping the first set of Tuesday night's match with Hurely, the Verona Lady Wildcats roared back for a 2-1 victory over the Lady Tigers for their first win of the season.
Verona fell behind early in the first set but managed to tie it at five points apiece before taking the lead on an ace by senior Nicole Stephenson. The lead wouldn't last long, though, as Hurley rattled off the next five points to force coach Brad Stewart to take his first timeout.
After the break, the Lady Wildcats came back a bit to get back within a point of the lead, but Hurley slowly pulled ahead and stayed ahead for the rest of the set, winning 25-19.
With the first nervy set of the season under their belts, the Lady Wildcats found their rhythm, rattling off six straight points to begin the second set. They pushed the lead to 10-2 before Hurley called a timeout, and after one more Verona point, the Lady Tigers went on a run of their own.
The visitors came back to make it a 13-12 game before Stewart called a timeout to regroup his team. From there the set stayed tight, as the biggest lead Verona could manage was three points.
But the Lady Wildcats got the job done on the second set point, as senior Madison Shrum made a kill for the win to force a third set.
Unlike the second, the deciding set began with Hurley picking up the first three points, but Verona again pulled back into it.
A block kill by Stephenson gave the Lady Wildcats a 5-4 lead, and the home team kept rolling as freshman Carolina Castillo served up the next four points.
The lead would hold all the way to the end of the match, as Hurley couldn't fight back against the Verona offense. The Lady Wildcats took the final set by a 25-17 score.
In the stats, Stephenson led the team with 15 kills, four blocks and seven digs, while Shrum added nine kills, eight digs and three aces. Senior Jasmine Lechner led the assists category with 22 and added four aces.
Following the win, Verona will host its invitational tournament on Saturday. Pool play begins at 8:20 at Verona and Purdy. The Lady Wildcats' first match will be at 10:00 against Everton. Bracket play begins at 4:00.
