Vernon Wyatt Massey, age 85, of Aurora, Missouri, passed away at 6:04 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. He was born October 11, 1932, in Batesville, Arkansas, the son of R.A. and Merle (Jeffery) Massey.
Vernon graduated in 1950 from Desha, Arkansas High School and received his Bachelors of Arts Degree from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas and his Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. He served in the Army medical corp in Germany for one year during the Korean Conflict. Vernon started his teaching and coaching career in Puxico, Missouri. He worked for the Aurora School System for 30 years, with the last 24 years as a high school counselor. He was Shaklee coordinator for 46 years and was a former deacon and elder for the Aurora Church of Christ.
On September 6, 1952, he married Helen Kemp, in Batesville, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on May 14, 2016.
Vernon is survived by his two sons, Jim Massey and his wife, Cheryl, of Wheelerville, Missouri and Tim Massey and his wife, Celeste, of Brooklyn, New York; one daughter, Michelle Lewis of Aurora; one brother, Loy Massey of Paragould, Arkansas; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild.
His parents, R.A. and Merle, wife, Helen, daughter, Tonna and brother, Hoyle Massey preceded him in death.
A funeral service, under the direction of the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the Aurora Church of Christ. Burial will follow at the Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to Kerin Kids in care of the funeral home.
