William Ward Torbett, age 83, of Liberty, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Alamance County after several weeks of failing health. Born in Marionville, Missouri, he was the son of the late Huber Alexander Torbett and Hazel Agnes (Williams) Torbett.
He was married for over 58 years to Olive Carolyn (Thomson) Torbett, who survives.
William was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, he then was employed with AT&T before retiring with over 32 years of service. William enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and created many projects in his shop. He also loved the outdoors and was an expert gardener. William and his wife, Carolyn were long time members of Alamance Presbyterian Church and while his health permitted, he was active in church work and served as an Elder and a Sunday School teacher for many years. William was a very devoted family man to his wife, children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Mr. Torbett is survived by his wife, Olive, of the home; daughter, Margaret Metzger and husband, Richard, of Jackson, Wisconsin; two sons, Patrick Torbett and wife, Melissa, of Geary, Oklahoma, and Thomas Torbett and wife, Kelli, of Marionville, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Eva Jo Drake of Minnesota; sister-in-law, Paula Thomson of Branson, Missouri and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Martha Lee Torbett, Louise (Howard) Weld Dixie (Henry) Schafer; brother-in-law, Don Drake and two nephews, Lawrence Weld and Andrew Thomson.
A funeral service under the direction of the Williams Funeral Home in Marionville will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church of Marionville. Burial will follow at the Marionville IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the church.
