During the August 26 meeting of the Verona School Board, Bill Sweet, superintendent, recognized Dale Whitlock, Quinton Bauer and Eugene Mahurin for the countless hours they have spent constructing the bleacher extensions in the gym.
“I am grateful to these patrons who volunteered their time,” said Sweet.
Continuing with items related to the building project, the board heard an update on the locker room addition. The report included the fact painting has been a problem with the moisture content too high to paint, thus slowing down the project. Workers were to start painting early this week; the ceiling grid and tile will to go up as soon as possible.
Sweet advised he had received bids for asphalting the new parking lot, which is adjacent to the locker room addition. Bids were: Bishop $26,470, Blevins $26,766 and Hutchins $27,896. He also received two bids for steps going from the parking lot down to Second Street; the board requested more bids for steps.
In action items, the board:
• voted to leave the tax rate for the 2010-11 school year at the current level of $3.12 for the general fund and $.83 for the debt service fund
• awarded the asphalting to Kelly Bishop Construction
• set out of district tuition at $7,000 per year
• changed policy to pay all district employees (excluding substitutes) on a 12-month schedule
• gave Sweet the authority to make fund investments and financial decisions for the district
In his report for the board, Sweet noted:
• Auditors have completed most of the audit. Fund 1 reserves are at 37.74 precent, and the capital projects fund is just over $790,000.
• Enrollment numbers are stable overall and show a slight increase over last year.
• The Adequate Yearly Progress report is in and the district did well. Verona is the only school to meet AYP in the county.
• The audit showed the food service program went from a $32,000 deficit during the 2008-09 year to an $18,000 surplus during the 2009-10 school year. Student participation during 2009-10 was 95 percent, and adult lunches more than doubled.
• The state commissioner of education has sent a letter to the district indicating it is officially accredited.
The board moved into a closed session for items relating to litigation, real estate, hiring/firing, scholastic probation and identifiable personnel records.
Upon returning from closed session, the board voted 7-0 to deny a residency waiver for a student considered during the closed session.
Members present included: Donnie Craft, Roger Bandy, YaVonne Koehler, Gary Wolf, Dale Whitlock, Ed Kristek and David Doner.
