The Verona Board of Aldermen underwent several changes on August 3, in a special meeting after two board members resigned, including the mayor.

City Clerk Julie Ruscha opened with a prayer, asking the new council be able to make decisions for what is right for Verona.

On July 28, Mayor Roy Snider and alderwoman Deborah Snider presented letters of resignation for various reasons, leaving Verona two people shy for a full board.

The appointments to fill the vacancies were Gary Welters and Shiela Massengill. Ruscha swore in the new members. Their terms will end April 2011.

The board then had to select a new mayor and mayor pro-tem.

Alderman Lloyd Airrington was selected to serve as mayor and Matt Pruente as mayor pro-tem. Those appointments will be good until April 2011.

On the agenda, the board had police officers listed as a discussion item, but the members passed over it without taking time to discuss the item. Ruscha said the members could say what they wanted, but Airrington said there wasn’t anything to say.

Board members then moved into closed session with Police Chief Joe Powell staying behind. The closed session was to discuss hiring, firing, disciplining or promoting an employee. The board remained in closed session for an additional 30 minutes after Powell left.

When the board returned to open session, there was no action taken from the closed session.
