Through a variety of programs, students in Marionville’s preschool and kindergarten classes recently had a chance to learn the importance of remaining safe.
Members of the high school child development class and FCCLA members presented lessons to the preschool class on safety when riding in a car, crossing the street and riding a school bus. These lessons included activities within the classroom.
To follow up and reinforce the topics covered in the classroom, the preschool and kindergarten students were invited to an assembly presented by Missouri State Highway Trooper Mike Watson, who brought his friend “Bumper”  to visit the students.
Bumper is a large, remote-control car that moved about while talking with the students.  Bumper went over many safety issues with the children. In addition, all students received an activity book and stickers to take home.
In addition to the Bumper project, Marionville FCCLA will sponsor additional safety and traffic programs for the Marionville school district.
Plans include a seat-belt simulator and roll-over crash display. Marionville FCCLA will again support and promote a no-texting-while-driving pledge. Many of these campaigns will take place during the spring semester.
Marionville High School  recently received a Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) grant from Allstate that will fund the activities.
Traffic safety is considered a form of violence affecting the lives of students, noted a chapter spokesman.
FCCLA members also sponsored a read-a-thon for Honor Flight, a program that helps sponsor World War II vets so they can visit their war memorial in Washington, D.C.
Becca Bowers received top honors at the high school level for reading the most books and gaining the most sponsors. She received two tickets to the Harlem Globetrotters game at JQH Arena in Springfield.
Members will compete at the Regional Star Events to be held at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin on January  27. A total of 13 students/
members of  FCCLA will compete in a variety of topics including traffic safety, leadership, impromptu speaking, illustrated talk, Chapter Showcase Manual and Chapter Service Project Manual.
Students competing will include Jessica Ash, Travis Brown, Jessica Duda, Brooke Eshelman, Logan Hicks, Nicole Kackley, Nicole Konkowski, Caleb Norris,  Kayla Rogers-Sigetich, Taylor Schmidt, Payton Stringer, Katie Walker and Brittney Wrinkle.
Iris Bounds is the chapter adviser.
