Officers from the Aurora Police Deparatment, along with many other law enforcement agencies, are cracking down on drunk driving with increased enforcement July 3 through July 5.

The Aurora Police Department is participating as part of a statewide crackdown on drivers under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.

“It’s never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. If arrested the driver risks the loss of their driver’s license, having their vehicle impounded, pay large fines, or worst of all, causing a traffic accident resulting in the injury or death of someone,” said Sgt. Mike Lyle.

In 2007, 243 people died and 4,897 injured in more that 7,780 alcohol-related traffic crashes, resulting in a death or injury every 1.7 hours.

Sgt. Lyle noted everyone is part of the solution and offiered the following tips for consideration:
• Don’t risk it – if you plan to drive, don’t drink.
• Encourage safe driving behaviors among family, friends, and co-workers.
• Have a designated driver who drinks NO alcohol at all.
• Report impaired drivers to local law enforcement by calling 9-1-1 or *55 (cell phone) if traveling on state/federal highways.
• Always wear your safety belt (Click It or Ticket); it’s your best defense against an impaired driver. Regular safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
