The Marionville Board of Aldermen met in regular session on February 11 with Mayor Doris Rapp, Danny Clevenger, Max McBride, Kay Leffingwell, Derek Eckels and Bob Duda Jr. present. Jim Dickenson was absent.
Also present were City Clerk Debbie Bateman, Deputy Clerk Kathy Urschel and Police Chief Mark Webb.
In old business, Rapp told the council that as liaisons, they could not oversee any spending amount, but the council could lower the amount a department head could approve spending on his or her own, according to the minutes of the meeting.
A motion was made by Leffingwell to look at amending the bidding policy for department heads at the next meeting.
The council also discussed the railroad closing. The railroad has talked at two meetings about closing some of the crossings in town -- Lincoln, O’Dell and Central.
Gina Valente asked the aldermen if they would be prepared to confront the railroad. “We don’t want our streets closed. We have to all fight them.”
Eckels said that the property values will be affected and the ambulance service will have to be diverted.
David Murphy stated that Western street wasn’t big enough for trucks and the Lincoln crossing had the most traffic; once a crossing is closed it won’t be opened again.
Denny Stringer asked if anyone knew or would know what is left on the trains when they are parked on the tracks.
Flora Walker stated that MODOT said its cost for redoing the underpass would be $900,000.
Rapp stated that MODOT and the railroad have not made a proposal for anything yet.
After other comments by citizens, the council approved to not close any railroad crossings in Marionville.
