Carol Young spent her last days on the job this week as the financial adviser for the Marionville R-9 School.
Superintendent Larry Brown and staff members held a reception for her on December 19.
When she began her career 29 years ago, she was the only secretary/bookkeeper in the superintendent’s office. Young moved to the finance position 11 years ago when Natalie Peltier joined the staff as the superintendent’s secretary.
As with most receptions, Young had a cake to share with well-wishers. From conversation at the event, she has served the cake at other gatherings, but relinquished that task to someone else this time.
Young began opened her gifts and gave a resounding “Whoa!” when she found the first small package to contain some currency. Co-workers teased her about making trips to nearby casinos.
As festivities progressed, a co-worker asked Young if she was sad to be leaving.
“No -- but a little bit -- I’ll miss the kids,” she said.
One person she noted she would especially miss is granddaughter Emmaline who attends school in the same building and who checks on her daily.
She said her plans include taking some short trips and taking care of her six grandchildren and her children, a son Ted and daughter Debbie, all of whom live nearby. She  noted she might spend the first couple of weeks “sleeping in” before starting some house cleaning chores.
Young spoke briefly of some of the changes taking place in her job in the past 29 years. Most notable was the advances in technology and equipment.
“We did it with pencil and paper when I began,” she said of the advances.
Hannah Jones, a Marionville graduate who went on to earn a business degree, will be assuming Young’s position and has been training with her for the past few months. She described Young as “very efficient.”
Young noted the “school will be in good hands” with her replacement.
