Volunteers are lined up to help with the Missouri Child identification Program (MO CHIP) Saturday.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the United Methodist Church, 1211 South Carnation. Sponsoring the local event are the Missouri Masonic Children’s Foundation, Verona Canopy Lodge No. 284 and the Aurora United Methodist Men.
According to statistics, nearly 2,000 children are reported missing or abducted each day in the Untied States. Gathering all of the information law enforcement officials need after the fact can be a daunting task, especially under duress, noted a spokesman.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a current, good quality photo is the single most effective tool in locating a missing child.
MO CHIP is a comprehensive child identification program designed to give families a measure of protection against the ever-increasing problem of missing and abducted children. The Masonic Children’s Foundation sponsors the program.
The program has no costs for participating families.
The program consists of five major components:
• digital photos
• digital fingerprints
• child information and emergency contacts
• a dental bite impression
• two laminated ID cards
Parents/guardians receive the digital photos and fingerprints, child identification and emergency contacts on a mini computer disk. The information on the disk is compatible with the format required by the Amber Alert program.
The dental bit impression provides an impression of the biting surface of the child’s teeth, which, like fingerprints, is unique to each individual. The dental impression collects enough saliva to provide a DNA sample and a source of a scent for trained canine search and recovery teams.
The Masonic Children’s Foundation retains no information concerning the children; the group retains only a signed permission form from parents/guardians.
