During the February 8 meeting of the Aurora Park Board, members voted to move ahead on repairs to the city’s swimming pool.
The board accepted a contract with A&E Solutions --Richard Werner for the repairs. The wastewater superintendent and one other employee will be the ones working on the pool with Werner.
Noelle Harmon, finance director for the city, noted the park fund had a little cushion that has been kept just in case of emergencies. There is approximately $26,000 in this account that can be used for the repairs.
The board voted to accept the contract agreement between Werner and the city.
Fireworks
Shannon Walker, executive director of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, provided an update about thefireworks display set for June 19. She noted various groups are making plans to participate, including:
• Grant Baker, baseball coach at Aurora High School, has set up two ballgames for that afternoon in Baldwin Park.
• The National Guard has requested to participate in some way.
• Boy Scout Troop 48 is going to set up a dunk tank.
• There is a possibility of a pet parade or cutest pet contest.
• The Mustang Show will be under way in Oak Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
• Various groups have expressed interest in having food booths.
Booth rental fees are: basic $10, without electricity $20, with electric $25 and $35 with electric and food set up.
Walker noted ADF had donated $500 for the set up of the hot air balloons.
Theresa Pettit, vice chairman of the board, handed out the final tally of the park survey. The board will utilize the results to accommodate residents and their needs.
Under the heading of new business, the board had some discussion with parents about the basketball program.
Members discussed the Comprehensive Plan for Parks and Recreation. The plan was developed with the help from past park surveys, with the last one being in 2007. Some of the activities that the board would like to begin are softball and adult basketball and tennis leagues.
A board member asked about the new fishing pond in Baldwin Park. Trent Thompson, director of the parks department, noted staff members are waiting on the Missouri Department of Conservation and to be cleared by the Environmental Protection Agency before the pond can be used by the public.
The board discussed other possible activities for the parks and how to promote the use of the parks. The board asked Thompson to put together one to three year goals in addition to the five to 10 year visioning in the comprehensive plan he presented.
The board discussed the idea of fundraisers to help fund the parks department and/or a half-cent sales tax increase. (This item is on the agenda for the February 22 meeting.)

In response to a question about providing league team shirts quicker, Thompson noted it was a bit difficult to order shirts before knowing the sizes needed.
The park board is comprised of Jennifer Woody (president), Pettit, Virginia Swaim, Mike McKay, Ana Aparicio, Brock Kennedy and Ray Perry. Doyle Ferguson serves as the liaison from the city council.
