The winners of the two top awards from the Aurora Chamber of Commerce made their way to the front through an audience on its feet and applauding.
Pat Woods took the top honor, the Community Service Award; Ken Ackley, took the Loyd R. Ellis Award.
The February 27 banquet was a “snow date” for the event originally scheduled for January. It is the Chamber’s biggest annual event for members.
Shannon Walker, executive director of the organization, and a team of committee members and volunteers worked many hours to prepare for the banquet.
Richard Koogler, retiring president of the Chamber, recognized Walker’s efforts by giving her the Foraging Squirrel Award.
“This is for always finding enough nuts to get the job done,” said Koogler with a sly grin as he presented the award amid laughs from Walker and the crowd.
Justin Richmond, the fixed base operator at the local airport, served as emcee for the evening.
Rhonda Quiroz, youth director from the United Methodist Church, offered the invocation.
Kay Kahre sang the Star Spangled Banner to open the meeting. She regularly shares her vocal or keyboard talents with the Chamber throughout the year.
The percussion duo known as Buckets-N-Boards provided the entertainment -- even enticing a couple people from the audience to participate. Matt Levingston, a graduate of Aurora High School, and Gareth Sever offer fast-paced  entertainment utilizing what their name implies -- buckets and boards. Those who might have missed the presentation here can catch them in Branson this season.
The duo of Jeramie Grosenbacher and Mike Bloss, both members of the Chamber, presented the Top Dawg Student and Golden Houn’ Awards for excellence in teaching. The Empire District Electric Company sponsors these annual awards.
