As required by state law, the Aurora R-8 School District must provide notice of the expected tax levy required for the coming year and notice of the public hearing, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., August 9, in the high school media center.
The school tax levy for the current year is officially set at the annual hearing, said Dan Decker, superintendent.
The tax levy is estimated to remain at $3.75 per $100 of assessed valuation.  Since 2010 is not a re-assessment year, the school tax for most patrons should remain constant.
Assessed valuation dropped from $106,011,276 to $104,855,479, a 1.1 percent decrease in assessed valuation compared to last year.  New construction amounted to $538,714 of the total decrease.
Approximately three-fourths of the district’s total property valuation is real estate -- residential, commercial or agricultural -- and one-fourth is in personal property.
Ninety-two percent of the district is in Lawrence County and eight percent is in Barry County.  Local taxes make up approximately 20 percent of the district’s $17.7 million revenue budget, said Decker.
A tentative agenda for the regular board meeting, which will follow at 7 p.m., includes a presentation from a representative Gardner Capitol regarding a single-dwelling housing development adjacent to Pate Early Childhood Center.  The company is asking for a letter of support from the district.
Decker will have information for the board about a grant for purchasing a school bus. Another item addresses a tuition request.
Several housekeeping items relating to the new school year and a resignation from a bus driver will be included in the consent agenda.
The meeting is open to the public in accordance with state statutes.
