Coi E. Landers, age 33, of Ash Grove, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for distribution of cocaine; four years in prison, consecutive to the cocaine distribution, for failure to appear; 10 years in prison for manufacturing methamphetamine; and four years in prison on charges of maintaining a public nuisance, possession of drug paraphernalia with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine and possession of ephedrine, with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, according to Robert E. George, Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney.
“Mr. Landers was set for jury trial on June 2, 3 and 4. However, agreements for disposition of his three cases were reached Tuesday (June 1), afternoon.” George said.
The cocaine charge stemmed from an investigation conducted in 2001. Don Ruzicka, a  conservation agent, investigated an illegally taken deer.
He made contact with Landers at the Landers farm located south of 96 Highway. Landers gave Ruzicka permission to look around the property. Ruzicka found an active methamphetamine lab on the property.
A search warrant was obtained for the property during which deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office found numerous pounds of marijuana; two meth labs; a safe containing cocaine and meth; and a briefcase containing methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, all packaged to sell according to George.
Originally, there was not enough information to charge Landers with the cocaine and meth found in the safe and briefcase. However in 2004, Landers took the stand in his mother’s jury trial and while under oath, testified that all the items in the briefcase and safe were his. The additional charges were then filed.
Landers was ordered to appear at a pretrial hearing while awaiting trial on the charges. Landers failed to appear on June 14, 2006, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
In 2007, drug officers with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding the manufacture of methamphetamine at a residence located at 23596 Lawrence 2100, near Marionville.
The confidential source said Landers was cooking methamphetamine at the home.
Officers verified the outstanding arrest warrants and on December 3, 2007, went to the home and were greeted by Lander’s wife and 14-month-old child.
The officers smelled a strong chemical smell consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine while talking to Lander’s wife. Officers were invited into the house, after which Landers pushed the officers and bolted from the home. Officers then apprehended Landers in a field located close to the residence.
“Our office is pleased with the disposition of these cases” George said. “I hope Mr. Landers takes advantage of the programs Department of Corrections offers regarding drug treatment.”
