On June 7, officers from the Aurora Police Department responded to the Bluebird Motel for a reported assault with a knife. The victim was taken to the St. John's Hospital--Aurora, where he was treated and released. Officers arrested Shane Sitton, 20, of Aurora, on June 8 and charged him with second degree assault. Officials set bond was set at $50,000.
The same day, officers responded to an attempted suicide. The female victim was transported to a mental health facility for evaluation. A second reported suicide attempt at another location proved to be unfounded.
On June 8, officers took a report of a burglary on South Madison. Cash and cigarettes were reported stolen.
A volunteer firefighter picked up a juvenile hitchhiker at about 2 a.m, June 8, and took her to the fire station. The girl at first claimed to be 15, but was later identified and determined to be 12 years of age. She provided a number of different stories and was released to the custody of a juvenile officer.
On June 9, officers responded to a burglary in progress on West College. The homeowner had walked in on a burglar in his home. The suspect fled the scene in a pickup.
A second burglary was reported on East Springfield. A description of the suspect vehicle was broadcast to the sheriffs’ departments in Barry and Lawrence counties. A Lawrence County deputy detained the suspect in Mt. Vernon. James R. Miller, 19, of Springfield, was arrested and charged with first degree burglary. His bond was set at $20,000. All of the stolen property was recovered.
On June 10, a pickup was stolen from in front of a residence on West Locust. The investigation continues.
