With less than one second left in the match-up with Southwest on February 3 in the Crane Tournament, the Marionville Comets were down one but had to foul to stop the clock. With Southwest in double bonus, two free throws sealed the win for Southwest.
Southwest started the game with the ball and the first seven points. The Trojans used trap defense with full-court pressure to keep Marionville off the board, but Drew Setzer put up two, followed by another two from Ryan Combs. Southwest still maintained a five-point lead with the score at 4-9.
The Comets, coached by Ted Young, had trouble controlling the ball and making solid passes against the tough defense of Southwest. The Trojans continued to put points between them and the Comets before Jordan Dykes put up two free throws. Dykes and Caleb Wells kept Marionville within five, but Southwest added another basket before the end of the first quarter. The Comets trailed 11-18.
The second quarter mostly was uneventful for both ends of the floor, leaving Marionville trailing by seven at the end of the first half.
Wells, Setzer, Dykes and Justin Hansen put up points for Marionville, while Southwest scored on jumpers, free throws and a three.

Setzer scored on an open shot from the block early in the fourth quarter, but Southwest went on a scoring run to go up by six. Southwest continued its defensive pressure to force turnovers to give the Trojans the 43-34 lead.
With about one minute left in the game, the Comets gained their composure and started playing with control, allowing Wells to score on two free throws and Combs to score on a down-low shot. The Comets were within five when Marionville increased its defense with a full-court press.
The Comets, forced to foul to stop the clock, sent Southwest into double bonus with 42.6 seconds left in the game. Combs brought Marionville within four with a three pointer, but Southwest’s free throws kept the Trojans just out of reach.
That was until Hansen scored on a three pointer to bring the score to 47-48.
The Comets again fouled with 0.7 seconds left in the game, giving the Trojans two free throws. Southwest sunk both free throws, leaving Marionville to throw in the ball at the other end of the court. There wasn’t enough time for the Comets to move the ball up the floor for a shot.
Marionville lost 47-50. Marionville will play for third at 4 p.m., February 6.
