Coming off a loss to Crane on the night before, the Marionville Comets were looking for redemption in the third-place game in the 47th annual Crane Invitational Tournament on February 6.
Marionville opened with the ball and the first basket from Jordan Dykes, followed by a pullup by Drew Setzer. Crane answered with a three pointer, but two quick baskets from Ryan Combs and Dykes put Marionville up 8-3.
Setzer continued to have an impressive first half with several shots down low, but he also showed his ability to shoot from the elbow and wing shots. In the first half, Setzer put up 14 points against Crane.
Crane tied the score at 10 after a steal, but Setzer’s two jumpers allowed the Comets to stay up 14-12 at the end of the firs quarter.
Setzer opened the second quarter with a pullup jumper, followed by Brandon McKinney.
Crane stayed just points behind Marionville, but the Comets’ tight defense and quick movement forced the Pirates to turn over the ball and be charged with walking calls.
Midway through the second quarter, McKinney put the Comets up 22-16, and Setzer, Caleb Wells and Justin Hansen followed to put Marionville up 33-22 at the half.
The third quarter opened with Marionville exploding on offense with two-point shots from Setzer and Combs, while Combs put up a three pointer for the 40-24 lead.
Marionville’s rebounding improved over previous games, allowing the Comets to take second shots and to keep Crane from getting easy inside shots.
Hansen ended the third quarter with a pullup jumper to give Marionville the 18-point lead with the score set at 47-29.
In the fourth quarter, Crane increased its defensive pressure with a full-court press, which the Comets found it difficult to move the ball up the floor. The game changed from a smooth, patient pace to a fast pace to allow Crane to force turnovers. Marionville also began to foul, sending Crane to the free throw line.
Crane also sent Marionville to the free-throw line, which the Comets were able to add points to the board.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Marionville gained control of the game for steals and baskets. Hansen and Combs helped give Marionville a 60-43 lead with less than three minutes left in the game.
As the clocked ticked down, the two teams started getting physical under the basket. The rest of the fourth quarter was mostly spent on the free-throw line for both teams with each finding hits and misses.
The game ended with a free throw from Hansen for the 66-50 win over Crane. Marionville accepted the third-place trophy for the tournament.
