Marionville’s rivalry with Greenfield dates back several decades, so anytime the Comets get a win, it’s time for celebration. The Comets didn’t have any problems celebrating on February 23 after gaining a 12-point win over the Wildcats.
In the opening of the first quarter, it looked as though Greenfield would run away with the game. The Wildcats went on a seven-point run before Justin Hansen scored on a jumpshot with the lob coming from Caleb Wells.
Drew Setzer scored on a down-low shot to bring the score to 4-11, but Greenfield continued to score as the first quarter ended. The Comets held tight and stayed within four at the end of the quarter with Brandon McKinney, Setzer and Wells scoring. The score was set at 11-15.
Marionville pulled within one early in the second quarter after a three-pointer, but Greenfield answered with a three of its own.
Marionville’s offense stayed patient and moved the ball around the perimeter throughout the second quarter, waiting to find Greenfield out of position. Patience paid off with Setzer scoring and being fouled. He racked up three points after draining a free throw.
Marionville closed the first half down by two, and the score was 21-23.
It was in the second half when the Comets pulled away from Greenfield. Marionville increased its offensive intensity and defensive pressure.
Hansen put Marionville within striking distance after a jumper and a three-point shot. After a technical call on Greenfield, Hansen made two free throws and put Marionville in the lead.
Hansen continued to score for the Comets, as did Ryan Combs and Jordan Dykes. Marionville closed the third quarter with a 40-34 lead.
Setzer scored first for Marionville in the fourth quarter with Dykes following with a jumper and a layup. The Comets went up 46-38 with about five minutes left in the game.
Setzer continued to post two-point shots, while Marionville kept Greenfield off the board. Marionville was up 50-38 before Greenfield scored again in the fourth quarter.
A wide-open shot by Wells with about a minute left in the game was the last basket of the night, giving Marionville the 52-40 win.
