Chase Brechbuhler, president of the National Honor Society chapter at Aurora High School, presided over the annual induction ceremony for new members on May 6.
In addition to Brechbuhler, chapter officers include Graham Weldin, vice president; Marissa Westfall, secretary; and Rachel Crockett, treasurer.
The National Honor Society is an honor organization for juniors and seniors. Excellence in scholarship, service, leadership and character are required for membership.
To be a candidate for NHS, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 8.25 on a scale of 11, an average score of three of four points on the faculty rating sheet and at least 12 extracurricular activity points.
The 43 new members inducted joined the 48 students who were already members.
Requirements for membership include maintaining at least an 8.25 cumulative GPA, completing 10 hours of community service through activities such as tutoring of younger students, contributing to various donation drives to benefit the community and attending meetings.
Taking part in the evening’s ceremonies were:
• Jeanelle Hopkins, leading the pledge of allegiance
• Crockett, explaining the meaning of scholarship
• Westfall, explaining the meaning of service
• Cord Schnakenberg, explaining the attribute of leadership
• Weldin, who talked about character
• David Miller, high school principal, who presented certificates of membership
• Brandon Harding, assistant principal, who presented collars to members
• Christina Beatie, who led members in the NHS pledge
