The Aurora Marching Band competed against 23 bands on October 8 at the Ozark Mountain Music Festival at Reeds Spring. By the end of the day, Aurora took first place in the finals.
This was the first time in five years Aurora has taken a first-place finish at finals against larger bands. Band members did it this year with a solid two-point lead, according to Steve Bryan, a spokesman for the Aurora Band Boosters.
Earlier in the day, Aurora won several awards as it qualified for finals:
• first place in D Class
• outstanding winds
• outstanding drum major
• outstanding percussion
In addition, Aurora had the highest score
of the 23 schools in
preliminaries.
At 8:30 p.m., the Marching Dawgs moved onto the field to begin their finals competition.
The band’s highest scores were in music performance and marching and maneuvering, for which there are no caption awards.

Aurora earned two first-place finishes in the areas of marching/maneuvering and color guard. The band placed first in the C
Division with the right to compete in finals competition.
The color guard, with members Kara Bryan, Nikki Purgason, Megan Clark, Destiny Sawyer, Mikala Sisco, Megan Walker and Taylor Wallace, had a remarkable day with the fourth highest score for the day, noted Bryan.
