On October 24, the Aurora Houn’ Dawg band competed in one of the the 38th Annual Greater Saint Louis Marching Band Festival.
Forty-five bands from four states in four divisions competed during the 13-hour festival in the Edward Jones Dome. The judging was performed by six judges from all over the United States.
The band competed in the blue division against 11 bands.
“This competition is tough” said, Mike Heffernan,  Band Booster president. “You get 15 minutes to give everything you got after hundreds of hours of practice, no second changes and the Dome can be pretty intimidating especially to some of the younger students.”
The band has put in more than 300 hours of practice this year in preparation for competition.
As the Band marched onto the field, several Aurora residents cheered for the students.
The drum majors were given the field for competition and the kids focus turned to the task at hand of perfrming.
Heffernan said The band meticulously began execution of its show with exceptional marching and musical expertise.
Each piece was remarkable as they stepped up to the challenge, he said.
The band completed its show and marched off the field for the last competition of the year and for some, the   last competition with this marching band.
“I have always heard that luck was were preparedness and opportunity meet” said Steve Bryan, Aurora Band fan. “I guess today we will see if we are lucky because they were certainly prepared.”
By the end of the day, about 100 drum majors lined up on the field for the award ceremony and Aurora was announced as the third place winner.
This is the highest the band has placed in the competition.
The band thanks the parents and the “Friends of the Band” who supported the  Band.
The Aurora Band is directed by Band Director Rob Spinger, Assistant Director Corey Lile, Color Guard Instructor Michele Parbury and Percussion Assistant Jeremy Meyer. The band is  led by drum majors Graham Weldin and Brian Jenkins.
