The first day of school dawned a bit cloudy and with temperatures much more moderate that in past weeks. By the time students reached their destinations, the sun was shining brightly.
Attendance numbers for the first day at area schools were:
Marionville--744
•K-5th grade -- 322
•6th-8th grade -- 198
•9th-12th grade -- 225
Dr. Larry King, superintendent at Marionville R-9 Schools, said, “We didn’t have anything out of the ordinary. It was a good start for the year.”
The count for Marionville was up from the 717 reported last year.
Verona--406
•elementary -- 234
•junior high -- 66
•high school -- 106
Verona Superintendent Bill Sweet noted there were 411 students in 2008 and 395 in 2009. He termed this year’s total as “stable.”
Aurora--2,053
•early childhood --465
•elementary -- 323
•intermediate -- 342
•junior high -- 352
•high school -- 571
“This count is students who were actually in attendance. We have several who are enrolled but were not here on the first day.  This number does not count our preschool students,” said Superintendent Dan Decker.
He noted this year’s total is four above the first day count last year.
“It was a great first day, and we are looking forward to a great year for Aurora Schools,” said Decker.
Dr. Joanna King, principal at Pate Early Childhood Center in Aurora, noted one major change in the morning procedure there -- community time.
Using the research based technique of responsive classroom approach, staff members at Pate ECC have implemented a new procedure for the arrival of our students in the morning. The responsive classroom approach is a way that emphasizes social, emotional and academic growth in a strong safe school community.
The approach consists of practical strategies for helping children build both academic and social-emotional competencies day in and day out.
During community time each morning, the students not eating breakfast will go to the gym.  Teachers will be on supervision duty to visit with and have brain-friendly activities for the students to participate in if they want.
At 8 a.m., Dr. King will lead the students and staff through an interactive modeling activity. Students will recite the pledge of allegiance and then be released to their classrooms with their individual teachers.
Parents are invited to attend and participate in the morning routine, as well.  For further information on this or any change at Pate, call Dr. King at 678-1552.
