The Aurora High School Drama Department and Vocal Department have once again teamed up to present to audiences the Broadway musical hit Bye Bye Birdie.
Winner of four 1961 Tony Awards, including best musical, students will perform Bye Bye Birdie this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, (January 23 through 25), in the AHS Black Box Theater.
The Saturday and Monday performances will take place at 7 p.m., while the Sunday production hits the stage at 2 p.m.
The story centers around rock-n-roll superstar Conrad Birdie (loosely based on Elvis Presley), who is about to be drafted into the Army, much to the dismay of his adoring fans.
Complications occur when his agent, Albert Peterson, devises a publicity stunt to have Conrad give a final, goodbye kiss to one lucky girl from Sweet Apple, Ohio on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Audiences will enjoy the upbeat musical numbers as well as the humorous and fast-paced plot, said a spokesman for the event.
Tickets are $6 each, with ages five and under free. Seating is limited and tickets can be reserved by calling 678-3355 (extension 1326).
Cast members for this year’s musical include Josie Bodenhamer (Conrad), Christina Beatie (Rosie), Cord Schnakenberg (Albert), Graham Weldin (Hugo), Jeanelle Hopkins (Mae Peterson), Amanda Dean (Kim Macafee), Collin Schnakenberg (Harry Macafee), Ayla Smith (Doris Macafee), Julianna Beatie (Ursula), and Kyle Brigman (Maude).
The ensemble cast comes from both the AHS drama and vocal departments. In addition, support cast members also include students from the Aurora Junior High Choir.
Direction for this year’s production is Theresa Blackburn, AHS drama coach, and Kevin Williams, AHS and AJH vocal director. Additional assistance is provided by Sue Burton, vocal accompanist for both the junior and senior choirs.
