Angie Exter spent the past 13 years in the classroom in Aurora teaching children, but she decided she wanted more from her career. She wanted to be able to be creative and explore her love of painting.
Exter opened Glaze Craze at 1401 South Elliott Avenue in early June and hasn’t had a problem filling her business with adults and children.
“I’m just so blessed,” she said. “I thank God and the community for making this dream of mine come true.”
Glaze Craze is primarily a paint-your-own-pottery studio where patrons pick a piece of pottery. Exter then guides them through the glazing technique and offers design ideas through idea books, stamps and
stencils.
“You can have no artistic talent and make something beautiful,” Exter said.
For the studio portion of her business, Exter charges for the pottery piece, costing from $4 to $30, and then a $5 studio fee for the glazing and firing.
Exter also provides classes for adults and students. She teaches sculpting by hand and building with clay, because she doesn’t use wheels.
For the kids, Exter offered day camps in July. She said she sold out each class designed for children ages six to 13.
But Exter isn’t finished with offering classes for children. Exter will offer Artattack two times per week. Students ages six and older can attend the class from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays, and 1 to 3 p.m., Fridays.
Exter offers clay classes, specials, fundraisers and group options for parties and classes.
Exter has seen her business blossom and hopes to continue in the future.
“I don’t know one person who has come in (for a class) and not come back,” she said.
